Hartbeespoort Dam

Hartbeespoort Dam (Also known as Harties) lies in a valley south of the Magaliesburg Mountains and north of the Witwatersberg mountains just 35 kilometres west of Pretoria. Hartbeespoort is an Afrikaans phrase meaning “pass of the Hartbees” (a species of antelope); the “poort” is symbolic of a popular spot for hunters, where they cornered and shot the hartbees. The dam was originally designed for irrigation, which is currently its primary use. It is also used for domestic and industrial use.
